Week of May 21st Ringwood Kindergarten

Q & U’s wedding was quite beautiful. Everyone did such a wonderful job helping out. Mr. and Mrs. QU want to thank the parents for all of their generous help making the wedding possible. Pictures will be posted on our ‘Star Student’ wall for all to see.

This week we will be learning about life on a farm. Throughout the week we will be reading, writing, and making crafts all about the farm.

In our reading curriculum, our focus topic for this week is “How do beavers build their home? Throughout the week, we will listen, talk, sing, read, and write about beavers and how they build their home. Some stories we will hear and read are: Jim and Kim, The Red Egg, Go Camping, A Big Dent, and Building Beavers. In these stories we will hear and become familiar with our new Amazing Words: beaver, lodge, paddle, river, stream, and lake; and our four new Sight Words: under, through, use, and saw. Please remember to review all of our sight words everyday with your child.

Some of the stories will be read with the whole class and others we’ll be reading in small groups. In our reading groups we will focus on main idea. We will also practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency. In our writing groups we will learn about telling sentences. We will also focus on correctly writing our letter Ee. In phonics, we will be focusing on words with the initial and medial sound /e/. We will also be using our sound-by-sound spelling to write words on our own. In grammar, we will review our compound words and verbs and focus on pronouns I and me.

In math, this week we will finish up chapter 11 about our calendar and begin chapter 12. Chapter 12 focuses on counting on and counting back. Children will build an understandingof, and familiarity with, number pairs that make ten. The work in this chapter initiates an awareness of addition and subtraction, which will be taught using these and many other strategies throughout the elementary years. We will continue to practice basic subtraction and addition, counting, money, time, tallying, measurement, size order, and writing our numbers properly.

Please be sure to check the “Kindergarten Times” daily for updates, sign-up sheets, and important classroom information. Also, please be sure to bring the white ‘Take Home Folders’, found in the green cubbies, home and back to school everyday.

This week’s theme is Wind Power. Our words are balloon, blow, kite, pinwheel, sailboat, umbrella, float, twist, bang, burst, jerk & bend. We will continue rhyming and blending sounds. Our letters sounds to focus on this week are X, K, Y, Z. The story is Gilberto and the Wind which will tie into our theme and reinforce our words. In math, we will compare and measure capacity. The class will compare containers and decide which would hold more water. In social studies, the class will make a list of things that go in water, land and air. The students will also write about how something made them feel. In science, we will discuss what blocks wind, what wind can do, and how to clean up yourself! Arts and crafts will consist of spring animals! Our classroom has caterpillars and we will watch them transform into butterflies and then let them go outside!

This week in the three’s room we will be learning about the letter V and its sound. We will sound out V words to write on the board. We will also be talking about how plants grow and then we will plant our own flowers. We will water them and look to see how they grow each day. We will be making different types of flowers to hang in the classroom. Since its V week we will be talking about vegetables and which are our favorite kind, then we will have a taste test of different veggies. A reminder: We are closed on Monday May 28th for Memorial Day.

On Monday, we will be excited to hear about Andrew’s adventures with Clifford. Also, we are real excited to see Connor’s star student pictures go up. We will continue to learn about the farm this week. On Monday, we will have our Farm Fun-due! We will dip all kinds of fruits, like apples, pineapples, strawberries and bananas, in melted chocolate! Yummy! Also, we will learn about the pig, goat, horse, duck and a few other animals. We will have fun painting, cutting and do a lot of fun art projects. We will also explore the farm on our smartboard.

In our Reading Street curriculum, we will talk more about animals and their homes. Specifically, we will learn about the beaver. We will learn the amazing words beaver, paddle, stream, lodge, river and lake. Some of our literature will include The Red Eggs, A Big Dent, Gus Will Stop, A Small Trip, Busy Beavers, Jim and Kim and Building Beavers. We will spend a lot of time reviewing short vowels and focus on letter E. This week, we will also review main idea and informational text.

In Math, we will continue to count up to 10 and back to 10. We will count to find out how many more we need to get to 10 and write our numbers properly. Then we will begin chapter 13 atterns. Patterns are a part of human behavior in speech, a part of science in constellations and in the environment all around us. Although we have practiced patterning all year, we will specifically work on AB, ABC, ABBC, etc kind of patterns.

Finally, we will continue with our graduation practice. We are now starting to practice in our all purpose room a few times a week. We are working hard to learn our lines and songs. We can’t wait for the big day. Have a great week!

This week in the Pre-k we have an exciting week planned. We are going to discussing Push and Pull. We will learn new concept words lift, more, pull, push, roll, weigh. Our amazing words this week are experiment, heavy, light, scale, strength and sway. Then we will read the book A Little Bit More and our poem is Make it Move! We will also review the letters Hh, Ww, and Vv. We will be working on letters sounds and we will be also be breaking and making words and making towers and lining up different objects to measure the height of objects. In science and social studies we will be comparing objects and stacking objects and talking about teamwork and what it means to pull and push different objects. In Math we are talking about shorter and taller objects in the classroom. We will also be cooking this week so please look for our sign up sheet. We will also be practicing for graduation and doing some fun art projects. Also on Wednesday is PJ day ! We are going to have a great week!!!

This week in the three’s room we will meet Ms.V and learn about vegetables. Ms. V wears a vegetable vest with all her favorite vegetables! We will learn the different parts of a plant and what it takes for a seed to grow. We will plant seeds and find out what our favorite vegetables are. As always we are practicing our home address and our numbers and letters!!

This week in the two’s room we will be exploring different types of bugs ! We will talk about bees, beetles, dragonflys , spiders, and much more !! We also have a special day this Wednesday, it’s pajama day so make sure to come your pj’s ! We will also be having breakfast in our pj’s on Wednesday!

This week in the toddler room it is all about bugs and worms!! We will learn about many different bugs. We will be making bumble bees, ladybugs and spiders. We will also be reading lots of books about different bugs and we will be looking for different bugs outside on the playground. We would also like to wish Miss Michele and Brian a Happy Birthday!! We are going to have a great week!!

This week, we will be super busy! With graduation only about 6 weeks away, we are busy learning our songs and lines. We will sing them for about 2 weeks and then learn our individualized parts, make props and learn all the actions. I am sure you are starting to hear some really dynamite singing at home!In our curriculum, we will begin a unit entitled Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop. We will answer the concept question ” What tools do you need to build things?” We will learn out amazing words saw, screwdriver, drill, hammer, file and chisel. All week long we will experience these words through the following stories: Spin the Top, Will Cass Come? We Build a Birdhouse, Max the Hot Rod, Let’s Play Hopscotch, Fix the Big Box, The Best Club Hut and Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop. Our sight words this week are keep, does, want, know. In phonics, we will focus on the kn diagraph as well as ch and sh. We will review all our letters and focus on O in the initial and medial position. We will discuss characters this week and plot. Finally, we will learn about fact and opinion. In math, we will continue on with chapter 11. We are sequencing the days of the week and months of the year. Next, we will begin chapter 12, Counting on and counting. The children will develop strategies and learn methods to count on and count back. Within the context of these activities, the children will build an understanding of and familiarity with number pairs that make tens. This work will inititate awareness of addition and subtraction. We will also continue to review all of the concepts learned so far, specifically graphing, patterning and sorting. Finally, we will explore life on a farm thsi week. We will talk about the animals that live on a farm. We will spend time working with the pig, duck, sheep, cow and goat. We will read Three Billy Goats Gruff and put on plays for our classmates. Also, we will discuss the jobs of the farmer, the crops, the animals and their uses. It is sure to be a fun week! Finally, on Thursday we will be going to William Paterson College to see the play of Peter Rabbit. We cannot wait! Have a great week. Be sure to get your permission slips for the play and zoo in.

This week in Pre-K our theme is “Every WHich Way” and asking the question ” What are the different ways things move?”. Our amazing words this week are bounce, direction, straight, muscle, still and zigzag. Our concept words are down, fast, slow, start, stop and up. Our poem this week is called “Hands” and our book this week is “Oscar and the Cricket”. In literacy we will review the letters Gg and Ee. We will also be working on a sound matching game, letter sounds. In Math we will be working with lentgh. We will play a game to learn how to tell if a object is short or long. Then we will review writing our names and letters. We will about be working on some fun art projects. We will also be working on out graduation songs and working on making some props. We are going to have a great week!
