We have an exciting week ahead of us in Kindergarten!  To start off our week we will be celebrating Mardi Gras/Pancake Day.  We will decorate masks and wear beads for a Mardi Gras Celebration and then we will make our very own pancakes.  We will mix the ingredients and add in any extra ingredients we would like.  Then, we will pour the mixture onto the griddle to be cooked, and finally enjoy our delicious pancakes!  After our festivities, we will finish up our president theme with a song.  On Wednesday, we will begin our Space Unit!  This unit is jammed packed with fun interactive experiments, projects, and so much more.  We will begin by taking a virtual field trip into space with Ms. Frizzle and that Magic School Bus.  Next, we will learn what it takes to become an astronaut.  We will take a closer look at the space suit, space ship, and most importantly, the space food!  Then, if we are still up for the adventure, we will make our very own astronaut dolls.  Later on in the week we will take a closer look at our galaxy and the stars and constellations.  Finally, we will finish up talking about our dental health.  On Wednesday, we will observe what soda can do to our teeth.  We will also make homemade toothpaste and Tooth Fairy pillows.

Our focus topic for this week is ‘What is a lucky adventure?”  Throughout the week, we will listen, talk, sing, read, and write about lucky adventures.  Some stories we will hear and read are Lad and Me!, Can it Fit?, Our Musical Adventures, Are You Like Gabriella? and our ‘Big Book’ My Lucky Day.  In these stories we will hear and become familiar with our new Amazing Words: piglet, fox, lucky, filthy, cook, and scrubber; and our four new Sight Words: put, make, let, over.  Please remember to review all of our sight words everyday with your child.

Some of the stories will be read with the whole class and others we’ll be reading in small groups.  In our reading groups we will review sequence and focus on cause and effect.  We will also practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency.  In our writing groups we will practice how to correctly write our letter Ll.

Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme.  We will review the sound /h/, spelled Hh and focus on the sound /l/, spelled Ll.  Help your child find items around the house that begin with the sound /l/.  In grammar, we will review naming parts and focus on action parts.  .

In math, this week we will begin Chapter 5.  In this chapter, children begin by identifying objects that are on top of, under, next to, behind, in front of, and inside other objects.  We will eventually learn to distinguish between left and right and give more precise descriptions of location.  Basic subtraction and addition will be the focus, but we will continue to review counting, money, time, patterning, size order and writing our numbers properly.  Most of us are still writing some numbers backwards!  Please be aware of this at home and correct us if you see it!

Please be sure to read, sign, and return progress reports to school.  Conference times will be available.

Please be sure to check the “Kindergarten Times” daily for updates, sign-up sheets, and important classroom information.  Also, please be sure to bring the blue ‘Take Home Folders’, found in the green cubbies, home and back to school everyday.

This past Friday, Liam became our star student.  When school reopens on Tuesday, we are excited for Liam’s special sharing. We are also excited for a special visitor to spend the day with us. On Tuesday, we will celebrate Shrove Tuesday, also known as ”Pancake Day!”   In England, making and eating pancakes is tradition on Shrove Tuesday. The custom dates back to times when people were not allowed to eat eggs and butter during lent.  So, they would use their leftovers by making pancakes the day before lent began.  We will have a delicious pancake snack as well as participate in some pancake relays, pancake flipping and pancake word games.  In Reading Street this week, we will talk about lucky adventures.  Through discussion and reading My Lucky Day  ,we will learn amazing words piglet, fox, lucky, filthy, cook and scrubber.  We will focus on letter l spelled l and ll, in the initial and final positions.  Of course, we will continue to review previous letters and letter sounds as well.   Our sight words this week are put, make, let and over.  The academic vocabulary words are cause and effect, compare and contrast, poem and fable.  We will read and discuss the fable The Crow and the Pitcher.  All week, we will discuss concepts such as real and make believe, fact and fiction, same and different and cause and effect.  In Grammar, we will review the naming part (subject) of a sentence, and move our attention to the action part.  We will do some writing and play some charades game to act out the “actions” in a sentence.  Also, we will review capitalization and focus on capitalizing the first letter in a name. In Science, we will begin our 2 and a half unit on the Solar System.  This week we will learn an overview of the solar system, learn about the sun and the order of the planets.  During the next few weeks we will read many stories, make art projects and use our smart board daily to explore outer space! This is a kindergarten favorite!!! In Math, we will finish up chapter 5 and take our unit assessment to evaluate our skills.  Mid-week, we will being chapter 6 which deals with counting and numbers to 20.  Children learn to count in  increments first to 5 or 10 and then to 20.  As they do this, it is very important to continue to develop one to one correspondence.  They do this by pointing to each object and saying the number word. Children need to understand that each number they say is one more than the number before it.  This helps them to better understand one more and one less.  Another essential concept related to counting is that the last number named in a sequence is the total of the group of objects. This knowledge will help children to count on to solve addition number stories/word problems. As you can see, we will be very busy all week.   Please remember to continue to sign on to pearsonsuccessnet to practice reading.  Reading the same book several times will help us to read with fluency which is very important.  Also, book orders and fundraisers are due back.  If you are interested in Mad Science, remember to send back in your permission slip.  Finally, permission slips for our Liberty Science Center field trip have been sent out.  If you are interested in meeting us there to be a chaperon, please let me know as soon as possible.  Thank you and have a great week!
