We have an exciting and busy week ahead of us in Kindergarten. First, we have received two more Flat Stanley’s back from their travels. The first returned from Japan and the second from several different places. We are excited to look through the pictures and read about Stanley’s time away! Also, Monday is the Chinese New Year! We will be learning all about this spectacular holiday and creating our very own Dragons!
Our focus topic for this week is ‘What happens when animals change?” Throughout the week, we will listen, talk, sing, read, and write about animals and how they change. Some stories we will hear and read are For Me!, In the Kit!, Red Fans, Can Melvin Scoot?, and our ‘Big Book’ Farfallina and Marcel. In these stories we will hear and become familiar with our new Amazing Words: goose, gosling, caterpillar, butterfly, reflection, and cocoon; and our four new Sight Words: boy, girl, cat, and which. Please remember to review all of our sight words everyday with your child.
Some of the stories will be read with the whole class and others we’ll be reading in small groups. In our reading groups we will be reviewing characters and focusing on plot. We will also practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency. In our writing groups we will review persuasive statements and focus on how to write a caption. We will also practice how to correctly write our letter Ff.
Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme. We will review the sounds /d/, spelled Dd and /k/, spelled Kk and focus on the sound /f/, spelled Ff. Help your child find items around the house that begin or end with the sound /f/. In grammar, we will be reviewing verbs for now and the future and focusing on verbs that add -s.
In math, this week we will be continuing on in Chapter 4. We will spend the next week counting to 10 an adding one more. Basic addition and word problems will be the focus, but we will continue to review counting, money, patterning, size order, telling time, and writing our numbers properly. Most of us are still writing some numbers backwards! Please be aware of this at home and correct us if you see it!
Finally, in Science we have been learning about the Age of the Dinosaurs. Every day, we will spend time on the smart board observing the size, shape, movements and teeth of dinosaurs. We have learned all about paleontologists and will become one on Monday by digging away at our dinosaur site! We will carefully work to safely remove the dinosaur bones from the fossils! Last week we will learn all about the Stegosaurus! This week, we will be learning about the Pterandon. We will measure out the size of its wingspan right in the classroom and then create wings for ourselves. Next, we will be learning about the Apatosaurus. We will measure out the length of his neck, create a life size neck, and measure how many of our bodies make up the length of the neck. Then we will learn about the Triceratops. We will measure out the size of its horns and then create a set to try on! Lastly, we will learn about the king of the dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus Rex and create a Q-tip model of its skeleton.
