We have a fun week planned!  This week, Justin is our star student! We are excited to see his pictures and learn more about him.  Also, we look forward to getting to know more about our new friend Rebecca.  She had a great first week with us!
This week in class, we will be answering the question “How are things we use today different from things used long ago?”  We will be reading the big book Then and Now to look at some of the changes.  Our amazing words are gears, web cams, phonographs, headphones, handwritten and newspapers.  We will have fun creating a class book about changes we have learned about.  We will draw pictures of something from a long time ago and what it looks like now.  We will write captions under our pictures as well.  It’s a great week to talk with grandparents or older friends/relatives about the world they grew up in.  Children will be invited to share things they learned during our morning meetings.
Some of this week’s reading selections include The MapLots of DotsCan Max GoOld and NewMom the Tot andWhat Can You Do? In Phonics, we will continue to blend and segment words, as well as identify the sounds in the initial, medial and final position.  We will focus on letter O, learning both the short and long sound.  We will review some new rhymes from Truckery Rhymes and practice creating rhyming pairs on our own.
This week, we will read informational text, continue to practice cause and effect, learn about meaningful word groupsand practice drawing conclusions! Our sight words for the week are of, they, you and some.  Keep practicing the words as often as possible.  Also, be sure to log into pearsonsuccessnet to do some reading and play some games.
We will have some more prehistoric fun this week!  On Monday, we will finally meet the Tyrannosaurus Rex!  We will use books and the smart board to look at 3 D models of the T-Rex and assemble his bones.  T-Rex had teeth that were at least 6 inches long.  We will use our rulers to find other things that are 6 inches long in the classroom.  Then we will use interactive writing to compose a list of things that are equal in size to T-Rex’s teeth.  Finally, we will have fun making a skeleton of the T-Rex out of Q-tips.  On Tuesday, we will learn about pterosaurs, the flying reptiles that lived when dinosaurs lived.  We will learn about the Pteranadon.  After measuring it’s wingspan, we will use our bodies to visualize the immense size of this flying creature and compare it to the birds that are flying above us today.  Then we will make our own flying Pteranadon and see who can fly it the farthest.   On Wednesday, we will use model magic clay to mold a dinosaur of our choice!  This is a favorite activity every year!  On Thursday, we will get creative and make up our own dinosaur.  We will fill out a report of how it protects itself, it’s name, how it moves and of course what it eats! It’s going to be a creative classroom!
In Math this week, we will continue to talk about more, less, the same, fewer and in all.  We will learn to count down, 1 to 1 correspondence and we will determine how many more to create an equal set.  We will also continue to count money, add and subtract.
This week, it is Groundhog Day on Thursday.  Wednesday we will meet our classroom Puxatony Phil and make predictions for the following day.  Thursday morning we will use our smart board to read/watch Phil’s actual report and compare our predictions to the actual findings.
Finally, Friday will be the most exciting day! First of all, everyone should come to school in jerseys and sport attire.  Although we are celebrating Super Bowl, any sport attire is welcome!  We will have a little Super Bowl party with chips, salsa, pigs in the blanket and more!  Then we will celebrate our 100th day of school! We cannot believe we have been together for 100 days already.  The year is going by too fast! After talking about some of our favorite memories so far, we will create a special 100th day of school project and work in stations for the remainder of the day.  Here are the 100 day stations.**How many times can you write your name in 100 seconds.
**Writing-What would you buy with 100 dollars?
**Building-Build a tower with 100 cups.
**Fine Motor-Lace a necklace with 100 fruit loops.
**Build a sculpture with 100 marshmallows and toothpicks.
**Physical- Do 100 jumping jacks.
**Estimate- Which jar contains 100 items?
As you can see, we will be having hands on fun all day long!  We will be counting to 100 many times throughout the day.  Remember, the easiest way to count to 100 and stay organized is to create 10 groups of 10.
This week, Miss Kimmie will continue to work on progress reports.  When you receive your child’s report at the end of the week, you will have the option to schedule a conference.  Review the report card, fill out the form and return it by the end of next week.  Thank you for your cooperation!

We have a very busy and eventful week ahead of us in Kindergarten!  First, we have received two more Flat Stanley’s back from their travels.  The first returned from Florida and the second from Japan.  We cannot wait to hear about and see the adventures he has been on while away!  On Thursday, Groundhog Day, we will be meeting and learning about our friend Punxsutawney Phil.  He will let us know if we will be having 6 more weeks of winter or if spring will be coming early.  We will predict as to if he will see his shadow or not.  Then, we will graph our results.  Also, all week long we will be counting down and completing activities in anticipation of our 100th Day of School, Friday, February 3rd!  On Friday, we will be having our 100th Day of School Celebration as well as our Superbowl and Jersey Party! Don’t forget to wear your favorite Jersey to school that day (Friday, February 3rd)!

Our focus topic for this week is ‘How are things we use today different from things used long ago?”  Throughout the week, we will listen, talk, sing, read, and write about things from the past and today.  Some stories we will hear and read are Little Rob, The Mop, Mom the Tot, Can Max Go?, and our ‘Big Book’ Then and Now.  In these stories we will hear and become familiar with our new Amazing Words: gears, headphone, web cams, handwritten, phonographs, and newspapers; and our four new Sight Words: of, they, you, same.  Please remember to review all of our sight words everyday with your child.

Some of the stories will be read with the whole class and others we’ll be reading in small groups.  In our reading groups we will review compare and contrast and focus on drawing conclusions.  We will also practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency.  In our writing groups we will review writing persuasive statements and focus on writing lists.  We will also practice how to correctly write our letter Oo.

Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme.  We will review the sound /f/, spelled Ff and focus on the short sound /o/, spelled Oo.  Help your child create a short /o/ collage.  In grammar, we will be reviewing verbs for now and the future and focusing on meaningful word groups.

In math, this week we will finish up Chapter 4.  Throughout the week, we will be counting to 10 an adding one more.  Basic subtraction and addition will be the focus, but we will continue to review counting, money, time, patterning, size order and writing our numbers properly.  Most of us are still writing some numbers backwards!  Please be aware of this at home and correct us if you see it!

Finally, in Science we will explore our shadows.  We will use a flashlight to trace our profile.

In our learning centers this week we will continue to explore and discover all of the important concepts we have been learning about thus far.  In our in our art center we will be making 15 Valentine’s Day cards each (totaling 100 all together – Miss Trish made 10) for local nursing home residents; computer center we will create a colorful hundreds chart to help us count by 2s, 5s, and 10s; in our word center we will create our 100 words book; in our sand table we will be hunting for 100; in our writing center we will be writing about what we would do with $100; in our dramatic play center we will dress like we think we will look like when we are 100 years old and then draw a picture of what we look like; and finally in our math center we will be filling in the missing numbers in our hundreds chart.

We had a great week last week! We are glad to see that Andrew is recovering well from his surgery.  Everyone in the class has been taking turns to be his helper! Miss Kimmie is really proud of all of us.  This week, we are excited to welcome our new friend Rebecca!  Rebecca will be starting our class on Monday. We are all excited to get to know her.
We have a busy week planned, starting with Chinese New Year on Monday.  We will use our online site Bookflix, to read a story about the Chinese New Year and learn all about it.  We will learn the tradition of “cleaning out bad luck.”  To get ready for Chinese New Year, everyone joins in housecleaning.  This is symbolic for sweeping out the old and welcoming the new.  We will do a similar activity in class.  Everyone will work together to clean and organize our centers!  Also, in the old days, people believed that explosions scared away the bad spirits and bad luck.  Noise is still an important part of Chinese New Year Festivites.  We will gather some noisemakers and instruments and participate in a 60 second celebration of noise to chase the old year away.  Get ready to hold your ears!  Next, we will learn about the dragon dance, make our own dragon fliers and dance around the classroom with them.  We will take a little break and use chop sticks to enjoy lo mein for snack!  We will also participate in a symmetry activity and a Chinese game called Tsoo Tsoo.
In Math this week, we will continue to work on patterning, counting and money. In our curriculum, we will do activities to help us understand that fingers and toes represent a set of objects up to 20.  We will order numbers from 0-10, learn to add 1, understand the meaning of same, more, less and understand how many more.
In Reading Street, we will learn our new sight words girl, boy, which and cat.  Our main reading selection is calledFarfallina and Marcel. In this story of friendship, we will meet 2 animals that go through some changes.  We will use this story to discuss our question of the week “What happens when animals change?”  We will also learn our amazing words goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly and cocoon. We will read many books including In the Kit!, Dad and Fif, Can Melvin Scoot? Animals Change, Red Fans and They will Grow. Every day we work hard on segmenting words and blending words.   Many of us are reading very well on our own.  Keep logging into pearsonsuccessnet.com and practice at home!
We will focus on the letter F this week in the initial and final position.  We will also be reviewing all of the letters previously learned.  Our academic vocabulary is  retell, plot, characters, caption, fable, verbs for the future and verb with s. In Grammar,  we will review verbs and  verbs for the past tense.  This week we will focus on verbs that add an s and using verbs to show actions that will happen.
Finally, we will continue to travel back in time and learn more about dinosaurs. This week, our focus will be Triceratops, Tyrannasaurus Rex, Iguanodon and Apatosaurus.  We will continue to read, look at pictures of them, measure their massive size and compare them.  We love using our smartboard to go on dinosaur digs and recover fossils.  Check out our favorite websites!http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/scienceforkids/dinosaurs/archaeopteryx.htm and www.tvokids.com/games/dinodig.  Have a great week everyone!
Thank you for your support with the bookfair.  Our school has earned so many free books because of your help!
