The holidays are getting so close! We have a fun and busy week ahead of us. For starters, we will be continuing with our curriculum. This week, we are finishing up Unit 2. That being said, we will be reviewing a lot. There will be a lot of phonics games and activities reviewing all of the letters and letter sounds we have covered thus far. We will also be reviewing syllables, initial, final and medial sounds, blending, segmenting and rhyming. We will be taking blending a step further this week and trying to have the children spell the words on their own. This won’t be a new concept, as they are attempting to sound out words to spell in their journals several times every week. We will be reviewing all of our previous amazing words and vocabulary words, as well as learning new this week. Our amazing words this week are ogre, magic, lad, naughty, beanstalk and lend. As you can probably tell, these words relate to our main reading selection of the week Jack and the Beanstalk. We will continue to discuss fairy tales, modern fairy tales, expository text, realism and fantasy and nursery rhymes. We will review our comprehension skills such as plot, characters, setting, main idea, retelling, sequence and reading for a purpose. Some of our other reading selections will be Tim and Sam, All About Me, Tires, Tim’s Garden and A Yard for All. We will use our main selection to discuss our question of the week “How are real and make-believe plants alike and different?”In Mathematics, we will finish up with the second part of chapter 2. We will continue to learn the concept of numbers 0-9, recognize and correctly write 0-9, pair up the names of the numbers with the actual numerals and pair up sets of objects. We will understand the relationship between looking at a number and actually moving that amount of times. In addition to this, we will continue to do some graphing, addition, patterning, symmetry and money. With all that, we still need to find some time for holiday fun! So this week we will travel around the world to learn about how others celebrate the holidays. We will use our maps and smartboard to take some virtual field trips around the world. We will read stories and learn about their traditions. For example, on Tuesday, we will travel to Sweden and learn about St. Lucia. Our girls will be St. Lucia wearing candle crowns and our boys will be the star boys! Later on in the day, we will talk about the Syrian tradition. It is the smallest camel of the Wise Men who deliver holiday gifts to well behaved children. We will do some size order activities and determine the smallest as well.On Wednesday, we will talk about our traditions here in the United States, the history of the Christmas Tree and will have our ornament party!! In the afternoon, we will visit the Philippines where star shaped lanterns called parols brighten homes and streets during the season. We will sort pieces of parols and assemble our own! Later in the week, we will visit Australia where Christmas is a summer celebration! Thank you to Liam’s family for lending us some books about Christmas in Australia. Finally, on Friday we will celebrate Los Posados! We will discuss the Mexican celebration and again, review our own traditions. You should expect to hear your children talking all about what we are learning. If you have anything to share about a holiday, let me know! We love having parents get involved in our day to day lessons!!!

We had a terrific time last week making our gingerbread houses. They all looked delicious! Our theme for this week is “Jack and the Beanstalk” and Holiday’s Around the World. Throughout this week, we will be packing our bags and traveling around the world to observe different traditions and holidays. We will be looking more closely at Christmas in Italy, Kwanzaa in Africa, Christmas in Mexico, Hanukkah in Israel, and Christmas in the USA. We will then discuss some similarities and differences between each. We would love to hear/see/learn about any traditions your family may have for this holiday season. You may have a favorite story, snack, activity/game, etc, that you would like to share. For example, for the past three years on christmas day my family builds something (changes yearly) out of legos. The first year it was a 10 foot pyramid, then a life size Santa’s sled, and last year was an 8 foot toy soldier. This year we will be building a phone booth from London, England. I have brought in pictures to show everyone our finished products.
Our ‘question of the week’ is “How are real and make-believe plants alike and different?” Throughout this week we will talk, sing, read, and write about real and make-believe plants. We will start off taking a look at our new ‘Amazing Words’: beanstalk, lad, ogre, magic, naughty, and lend. We also have four new Sight Words: not, can, going, and up, which we will add to our Word Book. We will hear these words throughout the week in various stories we hear and read. Some stories we will be reading this week are: Sam Sit, Tim and Sam, Tim’s Garden, Tires, and our big book Jack and the Beanstalk. We will review focusing and sequence, and focusing on realism in our fantasy groups. We will practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency. Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme. We will be focusing on the sound /i/ spelled Ii. We will continue to work on our adjectives focusing on adjectives for opposites. When talking with your child, encourage them to use their adjectives when describing something. In writing we will be learning about the writing process.
In Math, we will be exploring addition. Along with our number practice, we will continue to learn, count, and work with money. More specifically, we have been exploring the dime, quarter, and the half dollar. Also, we will continue exploring number patterns on our 100s chart and counting forward and backwards from 20. In Science, we will continue learning about winter and the different characteristics of our four seasons. Next week, we will be making our Magic Snow and exploring the different states of water. In Social Studies, throughout the upcoming weeks we will be exploring Holidays Around the World. We are excited to travel around the world and other children’s holiday traditions.
In our learning centers this week we will continue to explore and discover all of the important concepts we have been learning about thus far. In our Art Center we will be making a variety of holiday projects; in Math we will be working with our connecting cubes to explore addition; in our Writing Center we will be writing a story about the holidays; and finally in Computer, creating a holiday card.
For homework this week: read library book then fill out book report sheet. The homework is due on Friday, December 16th. Please remember to review all sight words daily.
Please be sure to check the “Kindergarten Times” daily for updates, sign-up sheets, and important classroom information. Also, please be sure to bring the yellow ‘Take Home Folders’, found in the green cubbies, home and back to school everyday.
