I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Back at school, we will celebrate Ailis’s birthday and enjoy Ashley’s star student week. As November comes to a close, we will start sending home December calendars and newsletters. The children are starting to buzz with excitement as the holidays approach! All month long, the children will be making holiday projects and exploring holidays around the world. The Kindergarten will also be enjoying some gingerbread festivities. Be sure to check our sign up sheets this week. As always we appreciate your continued support.
Although the weather has been calm and warm, winter is just around the corner. This week, we will be talking about bears and winter. Our big book of the week is called Bear Snores On. The children will use this book as a base to many lessons on bears, hibernation, retelling, sequence, main idea, setting and characters. The children will focus on black bears and polar bears, but will also become familiar with other bears such as panda bears, spectacled bears, sloth bears and brown bears. We will study how they eat, what they look like and all about hibernation. Our Smartboard will be a great resource as we play games about bears, observe them in videos and even listen to the sounds they make. We will do some art projects about bears as well!
In addition, we will be reading many different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Of course we will read the traditional story. Then we will read A Moderne Tale, Goldilocks Returns, Somebody and the Three Blairs and a few other surprise stories. We will compare and contrast the stories in our journals and using Venn Diagrams. Come weeks end, we will vote on our favorite. If anyone visits the library this week, bring in a different version! We would love it!
In phonics this week, we will continue to blend and segment words, count syllables, practice rhyming and recognize final, initial and medial sounds. We will focus on the letter c making the /k/ sound in initial and final positions. We will sing songs, brainstorm words, collage pictures and circle Cc’s all week long.
In Math, we will continue to build awareness of the numbers 6-9 and build awareness of the concepts of numbers 6-9. We will continue counting, writing numbers, pairing sets, matching and exploring problem solving. In addition, we will be learning about nickels this week. We will count nickels, sort money and incorporate nickels into our snack routine. Allow your children to sort and count your coins at the end of the day!
As you can see, we continue to work very hard in class but still have plenty of fun! Please continue to login to pearsonsuccessnet.com to help your child reread our reading selections. You may also find some additional books and games to reinforce what we are working on. In the coming weeks, your child may be receiving individualized homework packets to complete at home. Your child will receive a packet based on the skills he or she needs to work on. Also, please send in your holiday tradition sheets so we can begin talking about them in class!
As always, I am always here for any concerns you may have. Have a great week!

But not everyone is happy all the time, so Ms.A wants to know what makes us sad or angry. During this week we will continue our shape review and listen for rhyming words.

We have lots planned for the quickly approaching holiday season. This upcoming week our theme is “Bears Snore On,” and we will be focusing on hibernation. On Tuesday, November 29th, we will join Miss Rachel’s and Miss Dana’s class to put our ‘Bears’ to sleep for the winter. Please remember to bring in a teddy bear (NOT a FAVORITE) for our hibernation activity. Then, come spring, we will wake our bears from their long winter rest!
Our ‘question of the week’ is “What unique thing does a bear do in the winter?” Throughout this week we will talk, sing, read, and write about a sleeping bear. We will start off taking a look at our new ‘Amazing Words’: sleep, sinter, cave, woods, storm, and blustery. We also have four new Sight Words: or, them, if, and far, which we will add to our Word Book. We will hear these words throughout the week in various stories we hear and read. Some stories we will be reading this week are: The Cap, My Cap, Winter Fun, Trucktown: The Cap, and our big book Bear Snores On. We will review setting and main idea, and focusing on realism and fantasy in our reading groups. We will practice sounding out unfamiliar words, recognizing new sight words and reading with fluency. Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme. We will be focusing on the sound /k/ spelled Cc. Help your children find words around the house that begin with the sound /k/. We will continue to work on our adjectives focusing on sizes and numbers. When talking with your child, encourage them to use their adjectives and be very descriptive. In writing we will be learning about poems and creating one of our very own.
In Math, we will be focusing on numbers 0-9 this week. We will also be introduced to one more, one less, and the same number. Along with our number practice, we will continue to learn, count, and work with money, more specifically the penny and nickel. We are doing a terrific job using our pennies and nickels to pay for our snack. For the next couple weeks we will be exploring the dime, quarter, and the half dollar. Also, we will continue exploring number patterns on our 100s chart and counting forward and backwards from 20. In Science, we will finish up learning about our five senses. We will be doing a few activities and conduct a smell, taste, touch experiment. Then, we will be begin to discuss some characteristics of winter.
In our learning centers this week we will continue to explore and discover all of the important concepts we have been learning about thus far. In our Art Center we will be making Christmas Stockings; in Math we will be using our ‘Stick ems’ to create our numbers 0-9; in our Writing Center we will be completing an ‘Adjective Scavenger Hunt’; in Reading we will choose a decodable reader of our choice and draw a picture of the main idea of the story; in the Word Center we will be separating picture cards by beginning sound; and finally in Science, we will be making our “High Five” poster where we will have to color, cut, and glue pictures to match each sense.
For homework this week: use the letter tiles to create all of our sight words on pearsonsuccess.net, select a library book to take home and read for the week, and lastly practice writing your address in your green handwriting notebook. The homework is due on Friday, December 5th. Please remember to review all sight words daily.
Please be sure to check the “Kindergarten Times” daily for updates, sign-up sheets, and important classroom information. Also, please be sure to bring the yellow ‘Take Home Folders’, found in the green cubbies, home and back to school everyday.
Miss Trish
*** Help Needed: Our Gingerbread Unit will take place during the week of December 5th- 9th. On Friday, December 9th, we will be having a Gingerbread Party! For this party, each of us will be making our very own gingerbread houses. Each student will need there own container of icing (vanilla or chocolate-which ever your child prefers). Also, I have posted a sign-up sheet for different candies to decorate our houses with. *** Please see the Kindergarten Times.
*** Coming up: During the week of December 12-16, we will be studying Holiday’s Around the World. Throughout this week, we will be packing our bags and traveling around the world to observe different traditions and holidays. We will be looking more closely at Christmas in Italy, Kwanzaa in Africa, Christmas in Mexico, Hanukkah in Israel, and Christmas in the USA. We will then discuss some similarities and differences between each. We would love to hear/see/learn about any traditions your family may have for this holiday season. You may have a favorite story, snack, activity/game, etc, that you would like to share. For example, for the past three years on christmas day my family builds something (changes yearly) out of legos. The first year it was a 10 foot pyramid, then a life size Santa’s sled, and last year was an 8 foot toy soldier. This year we will be building a phone booth from London, England. I have brought in pictures to show everyone our finished products. If you decide to participate please let me know by Friday, December 9th.
