Happy Halloween! To close out the month of October we will be celebrating Halloween with Trunk or Treating. We will begin Trunk or Treating at 9:30am. Please come dressed in costume and bring a change of clothes. Following Trunk or Treating we will be having our Halloween party and enjoying some Halloween festivities! The month of November is “National Good Nutrition Month”. This week we will also be beginning to learning about healthy food choices and our food pyramid.
We will be continuing with our “Question of the Week,” ‘How are flowers unique?’ We will be talking, singing, reading, and writing, about what makes flowers unique. During this week, we will be reviewing all of our sight words thus far and be learning our color words. Please remember to review all of our sight words everyday with your child. We will also be becoming familiar with our new amazing words: seeds, fruits, buds, stem, buds, bloom, and petals. Our Academic Vocabulary words are: compare, contrast, label, fable, informational text, and noun for more than one. We will hear these words throughout the week in the different stories we hear and read. We will be reading several decodable books entitled, I Have!, A Little Mat, Flowers, Tam in the Garden, and The Mat. Some of the stories will be read with the whole class and others will be reading in small groups. We will discuss characters, setting of a story, sequences, classifying/categorizing and focus on compare and contrast.
Additionally, we will be continuing to learn phonetical skills such as syllables, initial sounds, blending and decoding words and rhyme. We will be focusing on the sound /a/ and the letter Aa. We will also be reviewing our sounds /m/, letter Mm, and /t/, letter Tt. Help your children find words around the house that begin with the sound /m/, /t/, and /a/. Our ‘Grammar Jammer’ for this week will be focusing on nouns for more than one. Have your children tell you a noun that is for more than one. In writing we will be continuing to learning about the writing process. We will learn how to plan a story, draft a story, revise a story, edit a story, and share a story. Along with writing stories, we will also continue to write in our journals daily!
In Math, we will be focusing on numbers 1 to 5 and understanding differences and sorting using a single attribute. We will hear the following words throughout the week: same, not the same, different, three, blue, green, red, big, small. Along with our number practice, we will continue to learn, count and work with money, more specifically the penny and nickel. We have begun to integrate money into our snack time routine and have been doing a fantastic job counting coins using both the pennies and nickels.
In our learning centers this week we will continue to explore and discover all of the important concepts we have been learning about thus far. In our Art Center we will be creating a food pyramid; in Math we will be exploring our shapes on our geoboards; in the Writing Center we will be making and labeling a flower; in Reading we will be reading decodable readers of our choice; in the Word Center we will be spotting our sight words in the news paper; in Science we will be looking at a variety of flower seeds under a magnifying glass and drawing a picture of what flower we think the seed might grow into; and finally in our Computer center we will be making a picture of what we are going to be for Halloween.
For homework this week, we will be reading our books on pearsonsuccess.net and practice writing our color words in our green notebook. The homework is due on Friday, November 4th. This week in Pre-k is a review week. We will review all the concept and amazing words we learned so far this year. We will review all the letters. We will identify upper and lower case letters, find letters in our names, and write certain letters. We will continue to practice counting syllables in words and making and breaking words by sounds. In math we will review counting, sorting, adding, and taking away. Science review with be going over our five senses, listening for sounds, and talking about healthy foods and how they taste and feel. Each student will draw a picture of them-selves and draw in their 5 senses! Our arts and crafts projects will focus on Thanksgiving!

This week in the three’s room we will be learning the letter Pp and it’s sound. We will be thinking of Pp words and completing worksheets involving the letter Pp. Ms. P is going to help us learn about our bodies and all its parts! We will be singing head shoulders knees and toes while pointing to the parts of our body.

This week in the two’s room we will be learning about farm animals!!! We will be talking about what sounds they make and what they eat. We will also be learning about how they are important to us in everyday life. To learn the sounds they make we will be singing “Old MacDonald”.

Last week, Franklin had a great time with our birthday girl Ashley! This weekend, he is with Krystal! We can’t wait to hear about the fun they are having! Ailis is the first star student of the year. We are excited to hear her favorite story, see her show and tell and watch her perform her special talent. On Monday, we will be taking our annual pumpkin picking trip. After hayrides and pumpkin fun, we will head back to school. First we will compare our pumpkins and see who has the biggest pumpkin. Then we will do a science experiment with Miss Kimmie’s pumpkins. We will estimate the seeds inside. We will cut the pumpkin open and count the seeds to see who was the closest. Finally, we will paint our pumpkins!!! Parents: Keep in mind we use washable paint. If the pumpkins are left out in the rain, all paint will come off!!!This week in our curriculum, we will begin Unit 2 week 1. We will spend 2 weeks on this unit. This will free up some time for us to do some Halloween activities!! So for starters, we will learn three new sight words: have, is, that. In writing, we will continue with our stories. We have already brainstormed and come up with our ideas. This week we will write our draft, add details, edit and rewrite the story! We will learn about Folk Tales and read The Three Little Pigs. Then we will read The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark. We will compare the stories with a Venn Diagram. We will learn letter Aa all week. We will recognize A in the beginning and middle of words. We will practice the short and long sound of A. We will also continue to practice blending words and sounds out unfamiliar words. In reading group, we will read I Have, Ted and At the Toy Store. We will continue to compare and contrast in Math. We will explore same and different and numbers 1 and 2. We will continue to explore these concepts, practice them and really understand why the answers are so. We will also read many Halloween books all week. We will make bats, play an alphabet bat game and a counting bat game. We will read and learn all about our skeletons. Then we will play a game to assemble a skeleton. We will also learn about spiders and complete a spider book. On Friday, we will make and eat Monster Mash! We will mix “Boo Goo, Swamp Mud, Mummy Toes and Spider Fangs” for a delicious treat! This week is sure to be “Spooktacular!” **We are still waiting for two Flat Stanley addresses.* Next week, we will be mailing the Flat Stanleys who are ready to go! The children are anxious to send them off! **We are in need of a few things for some halloween fun. Every child must bring in one roll of toilet paper by Friday. Also, we need some ping pong balls and 4 plastic trick or treat pumpkin buckets. The balls and buckets will be returned to you next week. Thank you! **Remember that Monday is our Trunk or Treat! This week in Pre-K we are going to be learning all about Family Fun!! We start our week off with our fun pumpkin picking field trip.***THE BUS LEAVES AT 9:00 AM SHARP PLEASE TRY AND BE HERE BY THEN*** Then on Tuesday our friend Grace turns 5 !! HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRACE:) We will also be learning new concept words- guest, music, party, picnic, playground and trip. Our amazing words this week are celebrate, decorate, enjoy, instrument, musician and slice. We will make our pumpkin ice cream pie, that we did not get to do last week, on Wednesday. We will also be talking about and practice writing the letter Ss, Tt, Ii and play a game called Name That Letter! At the end of the week for Science we will be talking about healthy foods and unhealthy foods with a fun taste test. We will also be working on word problems for subtracting the numbers 1 to 5. We will also talk about what do families do together. We will learn a new song” Come Join in the Game” and we will be learning a poem called Family Fun!! Halloween is coming up fast and this week all our art projects will have a spooky feel to them. We will be painting pumpkins, making haunted houses, pumpkins that are spooky and ghosts that will make you scream!!! ****TRUNK OR TREAT IS MONDAY OCTOBER 31ST AND SO IS OUR HALLOWEEN PARTY!**** This is going to be a fun filled week for all of us:)

It is finally time for HALLOWEEN!!! Miss Blake is just as excited as the kids!! I encourage the students to dress up for Halloween. Check the monthly calendar for details of the Halloween Parade! We will also have a very festive and spooky Halloween Party in class on Friday before Halloween!!

This week in the Toddler room it is all about Halloween!!! We are going to learn about the different things we see and do this time of year. We are going to talk about witches and black cats. Watch out, you may see a real witch on Halloween in the Toddler room, but don’t worry, it is just Miss Barbara pretending!!! Have a fun and safe Halloween!!!

We have a ‘Spooktacular’ week ahead of us in Kindergarten! To start off our week we will be going on our Pumpkin Picking Field Trip on Monday, October 23rd. We will be leaving at 8:45am so be sure to arrive before then. We should arrive back to school just in time for lunch! When we arrive back at school, we will be painting our pumpkins, reading pumpkin stories, playing a pumpkin game on the Smartboard, and writing about our pumpkin picking experience. We will also be getting ready for Halloween with several Halloween Activities. In lieu of Halloween and our ‘Question of the Week,’ on Friday, October 28th, we will be making “Dirt Cake.” A sign-up sheet has been posted on the Kindergarten Times Bulletin.

Then we will be drawing a picture of what we see at Halloween; in the Word Center we will be using our letter tiles to create all of our sight words; in Science we will be looking at a variety of flower seeds under a magnifying glass and drawing a picture of what flower we think the seed might grow into; in our Computer center we will be making a picture of what we are going to be for Halloween; and finally, in the Listening center we will be listening to the story I am Ann and completing a worksheet about it.
For homework this week, we will be choosing a book from our library to bring home to read, and coloring, cutting and pasting pictures that begin with the sound /a/ in our green handwriting notebook. The homework is due on Friday, October 28th.
